Claiming back from your scheme

As a BHF-registered practice, we make it easy to claim back from your medical aid's savings or day-to-day benefits.

Gao is registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), which is the regulatory body that enables healthcare practitioners to submit claims to South African medical aids. This means sessions with our practice can be claimed back from most major schemes.

Sessions are paid upfront and you receive a detailed, coded invoice that you submit directly to your medical aid for reimbursement. Some schemes allow direct billing — please enquire when booking.

Questions about fees & medical aids

Does Gao Bokaba accept medical aid?
Yes. Gao is registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), which enables claims on most major South African medical aids including Discovery Health, Bonitas, Momentum, GEMS, Medihelp, Fedhealth and others. Sessions are paid upfront and a detailed receipt is provided for you to claim back from your medical aid.
How much does a therapy session cost?
Individual and couples therapy sessions (45–60 minutes) are charged at HPCSA-recommended rates. Please contact the practice directly at +27 12 757 6575 or info@gaobokaba.com for the current fee schedule and any package options.
What payment methods are accepted?
The practice accepts instant EFT (PayFast, Ozow), credit & debit cards (Visa, Mastercard), direct bank EFT (with invoice provided), and cash for in-person sessions. Payment is required on or before the day of your session.
What is the cancellation policy?
A minimum of 24 hours' notice is required for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged in full, as this time cannot be offered to another client. Genuine emergencies are handled case-by-case with compassion.
How do medical aid claims work?
You pay for the session upfront and receive a detailed invoice with all the codes required by your medical aid. You then submit the invoice to your medical aid for reimbursement from your savings or day-to-day benefits. Some schemes allow direct billing — please enquire when booking.
Will my medical aid cover therapy in full?
Coverage varies by scheme and plan. Most medical aids cover psychology sessions from your savings or day-to-day benefits, though some plans have a capped number of sessions per year. We recommend checking directly with your scheme to understand your specific benefits.
Do you offer sliding-scale fees?
Limited sliding-scale slots are available for students and those experiencing financial hardship, subject to availability. Please contact the practice directly to discuss your circumstances confidentially.
Can I pay for sessions in instalments?
For psychometric and psycho-legal assessments, payment plans can be arranged in advance. Standard therapy sessions are paid per session on the day. Please discuss your needs when booking.
Will my employer or anyone else find out I'm in therapy?
No. Your therapy is strictly confidential under both HPCSA ethical guidelines and POPIA. Your medical aid statement may reflect a generic service code (not a diagnosis), but no clinical information is shared with your employer or any third party without your written consent.
