Individual Therapy
in Pretoria

A space that is entirely yours. One-on-one psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and personal growth — paced by you, guided by evidence, and conducted in the language you think in.

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one treatment in which you work with a trained psychologist in a safe, confidential environment. Together you set therapeutic goals and tailor the process to your unique needs — there is no script and no one-size-fits-all.

You are helped to explore your feelings, behaviours, emotions and beliefs. From there, you learn to identify and manage your symptoms, recognise your strengths and triggers, and build strategies that outlast the therapy room.

Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes and can take place in person at the Pretoria practice, over the phone, or online — whichever fits your life.

Common reasons people come

  • 04 Grief & bereavement Loss of a person, a relationship, a role — and rebuilding afterwards.
  • 05 Self-esteem & identity Self-criticism, self-doubt, or questioning who you are becoming.

The type of psychotherapy is decided together after consultation, taking into account the nature of your concern and the scope of intervention needed.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Identifies and reshapes the thought and behaviour patterns that maintain distress, with practical skills you use between sessions.

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)

Softens harsh self-criticism and shame, building the inner warmth and safety that make change possible.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Builds psychological flexibility: making room for difficult experience while moving steadily toward what you value.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Future-focused and strengths-based: amplifying what already works to build quick, durable momentum.

Individual therapy questions

What happens in the first individual therapy session?
The first session is an assessment and conversation. Gao listens to what brings you to therapy, explores your history and current circumstances, and together you agree on goals and the therapeutic approach that fits you best. There is no pressure to share more than you are ready to.
How long does individual therapy take?
It depends on your goals. Some clients find 8–12 sessions sufficient for a specific concern, while deeper or longer-standing patterns may involve longer-term work. The pace and duration are reviewed collaboratively and regularly.
How often are therapy sessions?
Most clients attend weekly sessions of 45–60 minutes. As progress consolidates, sessions often move to fortnightly and then monthly for maintenance and support.
Is individual therapy confidential?
Yes. All sessions and records are strictly confidential under HPCSA ethical rules and POPIA, subject only to the limited exceptions required by South African law, such as imminent risk of harm.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A clinical psychologist provides psychotherapy and psychological assessment and does not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. Where medication may help, Gao will discuss a collaborative referral to a psychiatrist or your GP.
Can I switch between in-person and online sessions?
Yes. Many clients blend formats — in person at the Pretoria practice when convenient, and online or telephonic when travel, work or health makes that easier. The therapeutic approach stays the same.
